About Windlass

Windlass Consulting is the most recent incarnation of a software consulting company originally started in the late 1970’s by John Marks, its president.  Over the years, the consulting company would disappear while its president went off to tilt at startup windmills and then reappear (with a new name) when each startup went the way of all ephemeral things.

Most incarnations of the business have been one-man ventures. The president believes strongly in keeping his technical knowledge and skills sharp and up to date.

Windlass Consulting was officially started in 2004. It is a Massachusetts S-Corporation and pays its sole employee W-2 wages. Windlass and all previous incarnations have always been in financial good standing, never been involved in litigation (except professionally as an expert witness), and never been audited for tax purposes.

Windlass provides the highest level of software consulting services, with more than 30 years in the software business, broad experience covering all types of hardware and software platforms, and a level of professionalism born of a long-standing reputation for excellence.

President John Marks and his family immigrated from England in the 1950’s. He received a B.A. in Government from UMass Amherst in 1967 where he learned programming. He received his Ph.D. from Syracuse University and taught Political Science and computer programming at Oakland University in Rochester Michigan in the early and middle 1970’s. He left academia and moved to Boston in 1975, where he began his career in software engineering.

The Windlass logo represents an 18th century ship’s anchor windlass.
